Our Start to Fall

I love fall! The rich smells, the bright colors, the cozy clothes, the fuzzy blankets, the crisp air, the plump pumpkins, the sweet apples, the crunchy leaves…it is a great time of year, especially in our area. Fall has been going for quite a few weeks now, but for us it seems like it is still just beginning. Losing most of September to health issues and hospital walls, it feels that today - a pretty October day that Danny is officially IV free - is our first day of fall. So cheers to another fall season and the Bessette Fall Bucket List!

One of my favorite things about following other bloggers is how excited they are for each new season, holiday and how they set out to celebrate it! This year, especially as we have already lost some time, I plan to jump on that bandwagon! Of course I would have loved to have a list that was 30 to do’s long and included a few more things…but this list is reasonable, something both Danny and I are excited for, and a good starter bucket list!
This list has a few well known Halloween activities - carving pumpkins, scary movies, and I want to cook a special Halloween/fall dinner in the next two weeks. Other items are things we have been wanting to do - like a simple date to the movies, to a little hard work like starting YOGA. Some are totally fun favorites - visit Old Town and DC or a special Shiba hike - while others are to dos but that we really want to accomplish - update new schedules and chore lists (as I start a new job). It is a solid mix of fun and productivity….perfect for our first seasonal bucket list.

And this week to really get into the spirit I hope to watch a few of my favorite fall movies. These are not necessarily scary movies or movies about Thanksgiving - but ones that make me long for the fall season - Stepmom and You’ve Got Mail. Stepmom is set in both the city and countryside of New York. Watching the scenery change with the story is incredible and I dare you to watch Julie Roberts don her comfy sweaters and not want to go for walk in the leaves. You’ve Got Mail is set in New York city - which has the same affect on me, wishing for a city walk amongst the crisp air, but specifically the email that Tom Hanks writes to Meg Ryan…talking of the smell of school supplies and wanting to buy her a bouquet of sharpened pencils! Ah…..that line ALWAYS gets me and I just want to be transported to Williamsburg to eat at the meatball shop and walk amongst the crowded sidewalk pulling my coat just a bit tighter and letting the crisp air swirl around my face awakening my senses.

As the days of fall are flowing by, I know that school is more than well underway, but that too is a big part of fall I actually really miss - starting school! I have told you my love affair with beginnings and the fall ALWAYS has several new starts to choose form - a season, nature, and school. All new school supplies….I LOVED THAT! I swear this commercial was made for me….except for that whole I was the kid not the parent. So I a a little late - but I send best wishes and prayers for all the kiddos in the school year that it brings a lot of welcomed change, exciting growth, and a chance to realize their true potential….with a blank new notebook and markers, you can accomplish anything!

Fall really is a wonderful time of year and I hope you all soak it up from the simplicity of hot cocoa to the big gifts of family time and memories that will last a lifetime. Happy Fall!
